South India Mural in Veerabhadra templeĬheckered stripes were prominent in textile designs around the Coromandel Coast in the 16th-17th Century. In the 1930s the checkerboard pattern was incorporated into the design of Scotland's police uniform which was later nicknamed Sillitoe tartan and adopted as a police symbol globally. Following the battle of Culloden, wearing check or tartan was banned through the Dress Act 1746 in an attempt to control Scottish clans who supported the Jacobite rising of 1745. The design was introduced by the Celts before it became a staple of highland dress. The pattern, in its tartan variation, is prominent in Scottish garment designs and gained notoriety from the 16th century onwards among Scottish Highlanders. Notable instances of its usage in England includes its appearance on the exterior of Hiorne Tower and above the windows in Westminster Hall. This design was popularly used across England and in nearby regions in parish churches and small houses following the 16th-century Reformation. Checkered exterior of Hiorn TowerĬheck appears in architecture as checkerwork (also chequer-work or diapering): a laying of bricks or tiles of two different materials or colours in an arrangement that, when finished, resembles the checkered pattern. The checkered garter snake, chequered skipper and cleridae, commonly known as checkered beetles exemplify natural occurrences of the pattern which have emerged without human interference or stimuli. Ĭheck may not have a single foundation specific to a practice, region or type of material because it appears within nature and thus can be imitated and adapted. The checkerboard pattern has also been identified in Bronze Age pottery and ancient Roman architecture. Check's variant tartan appears on the 3000-year-old mummy the Cherchen Man. ![]() Weavers have long produced checked patterns, but fashion trends and its level of ubiquitousness vary over time. This is illustrated by the comparative age of weaving which creates a checkered pattern as a byproduct of its process, as weaving is estimated to have originated in the neolithic period or approximately 10000 BC. Human uses for check predate its notable usage on the checkerboard in the board game chess, which was developed in its chaturanga iteration in the late 6th or early 7th century AD. Its design and incorporation by humans into pattern-making and weaving precedes its common etymological characterisation and derivation from the word shah in chess the language conventions from which the contemporary English word 'check' is extracted are younger than some appearances of the pattern or its variations. There are few known instances of its import into the regions and cultures in which it is featured. The incorporation of the checkerboard pattern in man-made objects has no definitive origin as the pattern has existed in assorted forms with multiple variations across continents and time periods. The word entered the French language as echec in the eleventh century, thence into English. It is more specifically derived from the expression shah mat, "the king is dead", which in modern chess parlance is referred to " check-mate". The word is derived from the ancient Persian word shah which means "king" in the Sasanian game of Shatranj an old form of chess which is played on a squared board of alternating coloured checkers. The pattern's all-pervasiveness and simple layout has lent to its practical usage in scientific experimentation and observation, optometry, technology (hardware and software), and as a symbol for responders to associate meaning with. Such is the case with check in ska and on the keffiyeh. The pattern is commonly placed onto garments and is, in certain social contexts, applied to clothing which is worn to signify cultural or political affiliations. The pattern typically contains two colours where a single checker (that is a single square within the check pattern) is surrounded on all four sides by a checker of a different colour. Check (also checker, Brit: chequer, or dicing) is a pattern of modified stripes consisting of crossed horizontal and vertical lines which form squares. ![]() Including discontinued operations of Sovest (reflected in CFS) and Rocketbank Total Net Revenue decreased by 3.3% YoY. The more diminutive black rat, which is arboreal, meaning it lives in trees, naturally heads upward. And once it gets into a building, it can chew into the walls and scale them. The Norway rat, the species abundant in New York City, makes its home in sewers, sidewalks and underground burrows. ![]() The rat carcasses likely came out of an overflow sewage pipe before ending up on the city beach, according to Phillip. “And if they have to, they’ll keep moving further up.” “They’re going to get to where they’re out of harm’s way,” Waldvogel said. “To put it scientifically, rats ain’t stupid,” said entomologist Michael Waldvogel, associate extension professor emeritus at North Carolina State University and an expert in “anything people find yucky and disgusting.” (They can even swim up your toilet.)Īnd rats are wily, apt to move to higher ground if they have the chance. They can swim a half a mile (0.8 kilometer) or more and tread water for three days straight. Rats are excellent swimmers, points out Michael Parsons, an environmental biologist and visiting research scholar at Fordham University in New York City. The same is true in Philadelphia, which was also ravaged by rain, according to health department officials there.īut rising waters alone are not enough to take down these gritty members of a city’s Rodentia. So far, reports have not increased since Ida passed through. ![]() The department uses complaints of rat sightings and inspection reports to track rodent activity. The New York City health department knows some rats drown when there is severe flooding, but as the city doesn’t take rat censuses, there is no data on how many, spokesperson Michael Lanza said. This photo was taken by Neal Phillip, a professor of environmental science at Bronx Community College. Post-Ida, dead rats washed ashore in Canarsie Park in Brooklyn, New York. Dead rats have been spotted washed up on city beaches. Perhaps hundreds of thousands of rats were crushed or drowned in the deluge, Bobby Corrigan, a foremost rat expert and former rodentologist for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, told Gothamist. In New York City, 3.2 inches (8 centimeters) of rain fell in a single hour on September 1 - about an inch shy of the normal monthly total. Experts agree that where Ida dropped record-setting rainfall, many rats living in storm sewers would surely have been killed by the sudden inundation. It’s impossible to know how many rats are in a city - probably on the order of millions - or how many were lost during a major storm. Less clear is what happened to the denizens of those cities’ subterranean depths: the rats. The devastating human toll is well known. In the wake of Hurricane Ida, the pummeling rain that hit cities up and down the East Coast at the start of September overwhelmed storm drains, poured into subway stations and filled basements like bathtubs. ![]() ![]() We pay for 2 Day return Shipping! Who has a vested interest in there being “an Octavia,” new or old? What would a “new Octavia” look like? How does her literary legacy affect the field today, and how might it do so in the future? And how does this legacy relate to this disturbing question? A panel of African-descended women currently writing genre fiction addresses this question, talking about Octavia’s oeuvre and their own: similarities, differences, market forces, and the pressures to model their contributions to the field on hers. Butler, some have asked who will take her place. This was a very big deal to me.Īfter the untimely death of the great writer Octavia E. In may ways, reading Wild Seed proved that what I was writing was okay, that people like me could be a part of this canon. And there is nothing like seeing a story in print that is similar to what you are trying to write. Reading Wild Seed, a story that featured an ageless shape-shifting Nigerian woman, blew my mind. When I look back, it’s clear to me that I discovered Octavia right when I needed her. Plus, I’d never read a purely speculative story set anywhere on the continent of Africa that addressed womanhood and patriarchy bluntly. I was one of two people of color in the writing group, and I was uncomfortable about workshopping my story. In the previous weeks at Clarion, I had just begun writing about an angry Nigerian woman in pre-colonial Nigeria who’d been run out of her village because she’d developed the ability to fly. That was the beginning of my bingeing on Octavia Butler’s works. I grabbed it, clasped it to my chest as if someone was going to snatch it from me, quickly bought it, and ran to my dorm room to start reading. There was only one copy of the book there on that fateful day. I was staring at Wild Seed by Octavia Estelle Butler As I strolled through the aisles, something extraordinary caught my eye, something I’d only ever seen once before in the science fiction and fantasy section of a bookstore: a cover featuring a dark-skinned black woman. I was attending the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ Workshop at Michigan State University, and the organizers had brought my group to the local bookstore. I first came across Octavia’s work around 2001, when I was well on my way to identifying as a black female writer of speculative fiction. In her introduction to the graphic novel adaptation of Butler’s Kindred, Okorafor writes: The below are simply missives from a few writers and artists whom I found discussing the great Octavia Butler’s influence-on their own work and otherwise-at length, to help us consider the lasting good she’s done for literature. That list might actually be infinite, and at least also includes Wayétu Moore, Rivers Solomon, Sarah Pinsker, Nalo Hopkinson, Lester Spence, Valjeanne Jeffers, K. Of course, the writers quoted below are not the only ones to love or be influenced by Butler-not by far. Not surprisingly, this includes many of the best writers of SF, fantasy, speculative fiction, and horror working today, and so to celebrate Butler’s birthday, I’ve collected a few of their thoughts on her influence. She died in 2006-much too young, at only 58-already a certified genius who had a profound impact on many readers and writers across the world. Tomorrow, June 22, would have been legendary SF novelist and short story writer Octavia Butler’s 72nd birthday. ![]() The likeness here is a pretty damn good one to Alexander Siddig. He went from seemingly shallow womanizer, who’s favorite pasttime was chasing Dax, to working for secret Starfleet organizations after we got that huge reveal that he was an illegal genetic augment! In the largely vanilla universe of Trek, this was some serious shit! And in terms of screen friendships, I think the Bashir and O’Brien relationship is a tough one to beat. He started out as a great Doctor and a green Starfleet Officer and his character developed quite a bit over the series. My Bashir figure has a lot less interesting stuff, so let’s do him first…īashir’s character was loads of fun. Let’s say another month or so. Last time I looked at the DST figures I gassed on a lot about my love for DS9 and today we’re checking out a pair of figures based on two more of the show’s great characters: Bashir and Dax. Actually, that would probably take forever, so I’ll just keep it going until I get burned out on the subject for a while. Yes, Warp Speed Wednesday is a thing now, and it will continue to be until I run out of Star Trek stuff to look at. |
